Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil (ANFO) is the most widely utilized explosive mixture in modern-day mining. ANFO components, when kept separated, are very stable compounds. During mining operations, they are mixed and fed into holes with air compressors, and the ANFO mixture is used for controlled explosion to release ore from beneath the Earth’s surface.
When ANFO explodes, the process releases ammonia gas (NH3). As a result, NH3 reacts with any alloy containing copper, or “yellow metal” (e.g. brass, bronze or copper metal). In aboveground mining operations ammonia dissipates into the atmosphere and does not typically cause damage to equipment. In a sub-surface or underground mining operation, the ammonia gas does not have adequate room to dissipate quickly and starts to corrode all yellow metal compounds that it contacts. Moreover, air compressors and other mining or drilling equipment must be designed to have minimal exposed components containing copper and copper alloys. Any copper wiring, copper winding in fans, brass needles in instrument gages, brass fittings, brass valves, etc., will consequently corrode from ANFO mining and drilling operations. This makes them a less economical choice for sub-surface mining operations that rely on rugged, long-lasting equipment.
Selecting an air compressor for ANFO operations plays a critical role in efficiency, durability, and overall performance. By prioritizing corrosion resistance and reliable performance, Vanair®, a Lincoln Electric Company’s Reliant™ RS85-LYM and ADHD-LYM Rotary Screw Air Compressors are built to withstand the harsh demands of ANFO operations while delivering consistent air power. Constructed without corrosion-prone yellow metals, they are instead designed with stainless steel fittings, stainless steel tubes, electronic controllers with IP67 protection, and sealed wire looms and wire junctions. These hydraulically driven systems offer up to 85 CFM and 150 PSI (Reliant™ RS85-LYM) or up to 185 CFM and 150 PSI (ADHD-LYM). With robust capabilities and thoughtful engineering, Vanair® provides a trusted solution for sub-surface mining operations.
