Ghost Miles

On average, one hour of idle time is equal to 30 miles driven.

How much fuel does a truck typically burn while idling?

The best answer is that it varies considerably. Factors that affect the fuel consumption are: displacement of the engine, the idle speed, the ambient conditions, any peripheral accessories consuming horsepower from the engine such as climate controls, heavy alternator usage, PTO usage, etc... and of course, the efficiency of any given engine.

We use the data provided by Argonne National Labs for our estimates.

How are Maintenance Savings estimated?

Running the truck at idle produces ghost miles as shown above. We take those ghost miles and multiply them by the typical cost of PM per mile.

How much CO2 is produced per gallon of fuel?

Pounds of CO2
Diesel
Gasoline
Gasoline (10% Ethanol)

Carbon Dioxide Emissions by Fuel Source

98% of U.S. gasoline contains ethanol, typically 10%)

Why do CO2 emissions weigh more than the fuel itself?

Because the carbon from the fuel combines with 2 oxygen molecules from the air to form CO2 during combustion.

If no oil change or engine overhaul prices are given, we will use our estimated costs, as seen above
